Questions worth asking any contractor before you hire them

  1. Are you a licensed tradesperson, or self-taught?

A Red Seal endorsement means the installer passed a national trade exam. It is the only interprovincial credential that proves competence: not just experience, but tested knowledge of building codes, materials, and installation standards.

  2. Do you carry WorkSafeBC coverage?

If a worker is injured on your property and the contractor has no WCB coverage, you could be held liable. Active WorkSafeBC coverage transfers that risk to the contractor, where it belongs.

  3. Can you show proof of liability insurance?

Accidental damage during installation, like a cracked window, a dented soffit, or a ladder mark on siding, happens. Liability insurance means the contractor covers the repair, not you.

  4. Will you provide a written scope of work before starting?

A written quote should list every item: linear footage, material gauge, downspout count, colour, and what is included in cleanup. If it is not written down, it is not promised.

  5. What happens if something fails after the job is done?

Ask how they handle callbacks. A contractor who stands behind their work will tell you plainly: no fine print, no runaround. If a seam fails, they come back.
